Shaker Spicy Ginger Bread

2 1/2 cup flour
1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ginger
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 each stick butter
1/2 cup sugar
1 each egg
1 cup dark molasses
1 cup hot water

Line baking pan with waxed paper. In bowl, combine flour, salt, soda, and spices. In another bowl, cream butter and sugar together, then add eggs. Beat until light and fluffy. Beat in molasses. Alternately, add flour mixture and hot water. Raisins may be added if desired. Pour batter into greased pan. Bake at 350 degrees, 35 minutes, or until firm in center.

Yield: 16 servings
