German Chocolate Cake

4 oz german sweet chocolate
1/2 cup boiling water
2 each sticks butter
2 cup sugar
4 each egg yolks
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/4 cup cake flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter milk
4 each egg whites

Melt chocolate in boiling water. Cool, cream butter and sugar and add egg yolks beating well. Blend in chocolate and vanilla. Add cake flour, soda and salt alternately with butter milk. Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form. Add to chocolate mixture. Pour batter into 3 9 inch round cake pans which have been greased and floured well. Bake at 350 degrees, 30-35 minutes. Cool, froast tops only.
