Shaker Bread Pudding

4 cup stale bread
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 cup warm milk
1/2 cup sugar
3 each eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

Crumble stale bread. Soak for 20 minutes in milk and salt. Combine eggs, sugar, vanilla, and nutmeg, and beat thoroughly. Pour egg mixture over bread. Stir gently to coat bread. Steam, covered with foil, in loaf pan, or empty can, set in a pan of hot water, for about 45 minutes, at 350 degrees. Cover with meringue, and bake at 300 degrees for 15 minutes. Serve with brown sugar sauce.
