イメージ 1 THE CALL: Come, My Way, My Truth, My Life

In 1633 George Herbert wrote The Call, a poem that echoes the call of Christ in John 14:6, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Herbert expanded on Christ’s call by incorporating additional metaphors: Light, Feast and Strength in verse two, and Joy, Love and Heart in verse three.

In 1739 John Wesley included Come, My Way, My Truth, My Life in his collection Hymns and Sacred Poems.

Ralph Vaughan WilliamsRalph Vaughn Williams wrote music for several of Herbert’s poems in a song cycle entitled Five Mystical Songs in 1911.  Vaughn William’s setting of The Call was adapted for congregational singing by E. Harold Greer in 1956.
